I Drink the Water

I Drink the Water
because I remember
the taste.
I return to the well
nearly dried.
Over and over.
Disappointed.
I sip, gulp, swallow.
The more I drink
The more I thirst.
I drink the water
though it poisons me
because I'm afraid
the whole world is a
Desert;
that no other wells
Exist.
That you are all there
ever was
ever is
ever will be.
I drink the water
though I'm dying inside.

And then I see
beyond the dunes
a garden green.
Lush
and growing.
It calls me closer
reaching for my warmth.

I brush the sand
from my eyes
blink the grit away.
I see.
You are the
Mirage.
I am the Well.
and I thirst
No More.
